Year 2010 Pekka Rinta-KokkoPredicting of mechanical pulp production and electricity costs in a paper mill Methods for predicting need of mechanical pulp production and for forecasting electricity market prices were created in this thesis. The work was a part of a research project where optimization tools for overall paper mill effectiveness were developed.
In the literature part paper mill operations and factors affecting overall efficiency of a paper mill were studied. Additionally the electricity markets and the electricity price formation and forecasting were studied.
In the experimental part a prediction for mechanical pulp consumption was created based on the data from the production planning system. The model was a simple probability calculation. A straightforward but quite effective forecast was built for electricity market prices for a short-term period. Additionally some interfaces and functionalities were programmed for the optimization tool set consisting of multiple software.
